Garage Door Remote Works But Door Won't Open?

The good news is that this usually tells you something useful. If the remote is communicating with the opener, the remote itself probably isn't the problem. The issue is almost always somewhere between the opener and the door — in the mechanism that's supposed to turn that motor movement into an opening door.

Here are the most common reasons a garage door won't open even when the remote is working, what you can safely check yourself, and when it's time to stop and call for garage door repair.

1. The opener is running, but the door isn't moving

If you hear the motor run but the door doesn't budge, the opener may not actually be connected to the door. The most common reason is the emergency-release mechanism — the red cord that disconnects the door from the opener so you can open it by hand during a power outage.

If that's been pulled, the opener will run perfectly fine on its own, but nothing transfers that movement to the door. 2. A broken garage door spring

A few quick checks can rule out the easy stuff before anything more serious is involved. None of these require tools or touching any tensioned components.

Make sure the garage door isn't manually locked — some doors have a manual lock on the inside that disables the opener.

Check for anything blocking the door's path, including objects, vehicles, or debris near the tracks.

Confirm whether the emergency-release cord has been pulled and the door is disconnected from the opener.

Check that the opener has power — look at the outlet, the breaker, and the opener's indicator lights.

Look for anything visibly damaged or out of position: a loose cable, a bent track, a gap in a spring.
